Whereas Dr. Van Sertima deals with the myth of Columbus as a "discoverer", and the contrary evidence that we have that, in fact, there was an African presence in America before Columbus' arrival, Jan Carew deals with the profound and devastating impact upon the native American civilization by Columbus' voyages into the Caribbean. He speaks about his character (or lack thereof), the consequences of his travels, his so-called "civilizing mission", and his "driving force".

Prof. Carew speaks of Columbus' perpetuation on the Americas, the system of racism that has affected generation after generation right up to the present.

While we are fed the story that Columbus "discovered" America, Prof. Carew informs us of the incredible, existing, civilized American Indian population he found here in 1492!
