The Black Family - Audio Tape
Dr. Clarke begins with a glimpse into the African family and culture “under seige” - the preparation of the African before and after the slave trade as well as the successful separation of black people in order to weaken the African family structure. He critically and honestly “puts us on notice” about how we, as well as others, must take a good look at how we interpret the traditional African society and how that interpretation plays a serious role in where we are (or are not) in today's society. Dr. Clarke succinctly discusses the African conflict developed through western immersion and how media (and some of our own authors) support the annihilation of the richness of our own culture and spirituality through the lack of knowledge. Dr. Van Sertima, with the skill of a verbal surgeon, analyzes the Isis and Osiris myth as opposed to the Adam and Eve myth. He forces us to challenge the extent to which the African family has changed in the New World and why. Dr. Van Sertima complements Prof. Clarke's presentation with an in-depth account and understanding of the structure of polygamy and its traditional African significance. As a result, while female African economic power created a positive base for the extended family, he also discusses the devastation and loss of pride that slavery brought to the African male/female relationship even up until today.
